I met Dave for the first time in 1999 when I was playing as a step-in on bass with Aaly Trio (a group formed by Mats Gustafsson) at The Empty Bottle in Chicago. It was my first time in the US and it was extremely inspiring to meet and get to know the musicians in Chicago. After many years of passing through the city on tours and recording sessions (mostly with the group “School Days”), I moved to Chicago in 2006 and lived there for two and a half years, during which I began playing with Dave. Dave and I recruited drummer Frank Rosaly to start up a trio (The Outskirts), which later became the basis for my new Chicago Quintet. In 2009 Dave invited me to step in as the bass player in his ”Percussion Quartet”, and since then we’ve completed two European tours and released one recording. Previous to 2009, the Dave Rempis Percussion Quartet released four albums together. This group takes its main inspiration from West African rhythms and free improvisation.
